Being There

It was a simple text, "Sorry u have company. I'm nearby now." My reply was equally short. "Come on by. He'll only be here a few minutes."

Our relationship is different now, but no less intense. Her father's leukemia is much worse. I can see the strain on her face, but nothing can hide or mar that beauty. We need each other. We hide nothing. We never have. Yet I'm amazed at how much I keep learning about her. Each encounter reveals so much more.

She needs me now more than ever. I can tell by the way she clings to me when I hold her, by the need she feels to be understood, to reveal. She needs optimism. She needs confidence. She needs to feel protected. Her need somehow generates in me the strength she needs. We were made for each other. We're inseparable... but we cannot be be together.

Life must have its little joke, but it can't alter destiny.
