Once Upon a Time: The Hunter

Once upon a time there was a fae creature who lived in the woods. Auburn hair blue/grey eyes bright with wonder and curiosity about all things. This little fair ventured out into the world from the safety of the Seelie Court.

she made her home in oak tree close to a clearing filled with a small pond and wild forest flowers all around. she built a lovely bower with a soft bed, a rain closet and a view of everything around her tree. The girl would spend hours walking the forest floor, watching the woodland creatures. Always aware for all the sounds around her. For there are always predators lurking. Some who had a craving for the softness of a fae.

she would often watch the human creatures who ventured into the woodlands. Some were there to enjoy the forest and watch the animals, look at the trees and flowers. But, sometimes there were the ones who came to hunt. Some with arrow, some with guns. Then there were the ones who came with ropes and traps. These she knew were very dangerous. Often she would see a dark hunter go through her clearing. He would stop and stand, looking at the ground, then up and into the trees. Always watching, listening. When the girl saw this hunter,,she knew to stay quiet and well hidden.

A few times this hunter would string ropes and set traps along the trails that she would walk in the company of the semi-tamed wolves as her protectors. After quietly watching this. The fairy would wait and listen until she was sure that the hunter had gone. Only then would she venture from her tree. With great care she would disable the traps. Sometimes she would find some of the small woodland animals caught in the ropes. This frightened her to see them struggle for their freedom. With gentle touch she would free them and watch as they ran further into the cover of the forest. That night her dreams were dark and filled with fear. she woke with heart pounding, skin moist and cold, her body shivering.

Now, the hunter would find his traps dismantled. He would stand and look all around the traps. He would then look up into the sky, at the trees. He would walk around the traps and look at them from all angles. The fae knew she had left no tracks, she had been very careful. She had grown up being told stories about humans who would capture a fae and keep them, take them away never to be seen again. A few had escaped to return to the court, they were changed, not to be the same ever again.

One day the hunter returned with a pull wagon filled with many different things in it. The fae watches as he strung ropes, nets, strange devices that he fitted to trees. It took him hours to set all the traps. He then stood and looked at all that he had done. He cleared the area, erasing his footsteps from the ground. Then stood well back into the cover of the woods and watched the clearing. Finally he left. The little fae knew that this was no longer a safe place for her to be. she would need to find a new tree to stay in or return to the court. That night with the help of the wolves, she searched out a new home, deeper into the forest.
As she slept in her new home, she woke from dark dreams of the hunter. The fae knew there were those who hunted to find food to eat, there were those who hunted for their own pleasure, some who were predators,,,and then there were those who were dark and very dangerous for the fae.
