Illegal Weapons and Ammunition verses illegal aliens

I am seeking the understanding necessary to follow the logic which decries the action to move illegal aliens from the shadows into a legal status that will allow for them to be accounted for.

The current government action does not stem the flow of illegal aliens into the country. Since the last great amnesty program that was to eliminate all illegals from the country and account for them or deport them , the country has had a new estimated 12 million aliens enter the country; and not just via the southern border with Mexico. It appears that the government has not been able to stem, let alone stop, this criminal activity.

So is it a bad thing to grant, not citizenship, but legal status to those that have been here for more than 5 years, have no criminal record and have blood relatives that are citizens; because the relatives were born here and are Americans?

Governments; local, state and federal, grant amnesty to criminals most notably when they allow people with illegal weapons and ammunition to turn those in without being arrested or charged. And this is were I get lost in the logic that one course is ok and the other is wrong and outside the authority of the government. Why is granting amnesty so people turn in illegal weapons ok and amnesty so people are legally documented and can be accounted for after the government failed to prevent their enter is not ok?

I am not a liberal but as conservative I would like to understand where the consistency is.
