Let me start by exposing my bias. I think Donald Trump is an ignorant, bellowing, media whore who I wouldn't trust to run my county landfill, let alone lead my nation. While certain aspects of what he said carry a small grain of truth, the way he said them was anything but presidential, and he is an embarrassment to the United States.

That said, I think his "plan" (mirrored by much of the GOP) is pure bullshit. I don't care if you built a wall that was 1000 feet tall and buried 100 feet underground and put every member of the National Guard patrolling it...the drug cartels will still get their shit into this country, and they'll make more money doing it than ever before because the slight squeeze on the supply will only drive up the costs to users. You want to de-fang the drug cartels? First, nationally legalize marijuana for recreational use. That will cut their profits at least in half, and they will lose a lot of political influence in the process. Next, develop a program to decriminalize all drug use and allow addicts to get the more harmful stuff for free, track the users, and funnel money from the idiotic War on drugs into programs that provide education and shepherd users into rehab programs. Get that done, the cartels are fucked, we're raking in a ton of tax revenue from pot (which is safer than booze), and we'll make a lot more progress with helping drug users.

The big wall also won't do much to reduce illegal immigration. I'm so tired to the whole "they're breaking the law" bullshit. I don't care who you are, if you need to cross some political border to keep your family from starving, the law doesn't mean anything to you. We would all make that choice if we had to, so maybe it's time for a little common sense and a little compassion. The U.S. agricultural economy needs these workers. If they had to pay US to work in those fields and canning plants and slaughterhouses, none of us would do it unless we were paid a king's ransom, and then the inflation rate on food would be astronomical...so let's recognize how important this is to our economy. We need a rational immigration program that forces the companies that use these workers to sponsor them for temporary work visas, chip in with associated costs to local communities for education and social services, and ensure that without going through proper channels, there are no jobs for anyone in this country without the proper authorization. That means going after the illegal employers with a vengeance...use War on drugs money for that as well.

That's a start...

I confess, katie, I don't follow or pay attention to anything 'Donald the Birther,' much. Either he'll win the Republix nomination, or he won't. Time will tell.
