Recording without your permission is contarary to existing laws in different parts and it is annoying and a question of reputation. Simply stop and go away when you learn that someone unknown is recording.

Self-respect is the corner-stone of virtues.

Normally someone records a conversation so they can remember it later or to go over it in order to assess how well or poorly it went so they could do better next time.

However, it could also be being used as evidence in some way or as blackmail. In some states it's illegal to tape a conversation unless both people in the conversation agree to it. In other states, as long as one of the people know that they're being taped, then it's legal.

Obviously, I have no idea why the person in question would do that, but you'd have to ask them.

Can I go so far to ask how did you see that you were being recorded?
Why didn't you ask (demand) to know why they were recording it, before shutting your lips?

It's simply wrong. Not the kind of person that you would want to associate with. What would come next? You're right to distance yourself from this idiot.
