I learned a long time ago to keep my private life out of my work. Particularly being in a male dominated field, anything remotely considered 'female' was used against me...by mostly women truth be told, but men have no tolerance for that sort of thing. Fortunately for me I like football a great deal and I love to fish. I was able to connect.

Over the past 30 years of work i only have a handful of clients or coworkers I'd consider close acquaintances and only one woman, my now best friend, that i ever opened up too....and i only do so off the clock. I never combine the two. Never. It drives her crazy but she knows me know and as soon as we get in the car I'm all talk...but at work...nope....buttoned up conservative suit...that's me.

I think you need to sit down with a large sketch pad and make a list of all the things you'd feel comfortable talking about at work.

Then make a column about all the things that you should avoid talking about at work...

Simply look at the "no talk list" and ask yourself where are your outs if someone brings up the topic...

I also like to share ( huge talker myself) .. but there is certain subject matter that isn't anyone's business...like I'm 46..not married..never talk about a girlfriend/fucking chicks like most men do.
After a while people just assume what they want to assume and noone asks the obvious.
So that subject doesn't come up around me.

Personally I think you should adopt the "guy rule"...you don't have to talk about your life/your feelings/ if you can find a subject matter to simply divert this attention.

Men talk sports for a reason...I can talk sports with anyone and have an instant conversation...hell even a connection with another man without talking about personal stuff in my life.

So perhaps there is a female equivalent? or perhaps you should think of making friends with more men in the office?
Men don't want to know who your dating/don't need to know personal info about your kids..etc

I agree - it is best to keep your private life away as much as possible from work....
