An excellent post, and I very much agree that the nuclear family has been constantly sold to us as "normal" for as long as mass media has existed. But I'm starting to wonder if technology is beginning to dilute that effect. The number of channels of communication are growing exponentially with each passing year, and as you stated, we now tend to self select the messages that reflect our own values. I'm not sure what the long term effect of this will be. Will this societal norm fade away as it's splintered into thousands of different viewpoints? Or will we as a society splinter and develop into thousands of separate in-groups with their own competing sets of norms?

It's interesting to ponder, but whichever way it ultimately changes, that change will occur slowly, and the residue from more than a century of mass media spoon-feeding will not dissipate quickly.

One thing that I don't think media can change, however, is our feelings about loneliness. I don't think it's possible for media's influence to change what humanity truly is: social animals. We certainly do not need the traditional nuclear family to lead complete and fulfilling lives, but we do need someone to in some way connect with, of that much I'm certain...even for a curmudgeonly old introvert like myself.

Come media feast or famine, have a great weekend.
