I met someone from this site who had a leading role in her church and had to keep her "other side" well hidden - providing real internal conflict. And I know someone else who has been disowned by his religious leaders because his marriage ended after he had a gay relationship. I generally feel the world would be a better place without man-made religion, because good people would have a clearer value-based moral code rather than one handed down from less well educated generations who feared the unexplained, invented supreme beings as an explanation, and provided reward/punishment in an imaginary afterlife. However, if you feel the need for some kind of spirituality, then one which does not judge or reject ordinary people for doing ordinary things is at least a sane and humane way of doing it.

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." John 4: 24 KJV

Separating and keeping separate spirit and flesh is key.
God hears only what comes from the heart, the spirit. Whether we are in prison, a church or a closet, God hears, sees and knows our heart.
Nothing else much matters

“Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.”

Very refreshing. I grew up in church & have always believed in God. I too have struggled internally for years over the guilt of trying to live a "good life" & being made to feel that this lifestyle is Evil. As I got old enough to make my own decisions, I stopped going to church because my interest in this lifestyle made me feel that I was a hypocrite if I continued to attend while committing such "sins". Later in life I ran into some hard luck, decided that maybe I did need to start living "right" again and get right with God. I gave up the lifestyle & developed a strong faith & relationship with God while attending a very evangelistic church. Life did turn around for me. However, the feelings and needs were still struggling inside me. I am again in the lifestyle (obviously since I am here-smiles). I have stopped going to church again, but I pray every morning & every night. I maintain my relationship with God & praise Him for all of the good things in this world & the blessings that I have seen in my life. I live my life trying to do no harm to others & I serve & protect my community. I no longer struggle with the guilt. Instead, I question the parts of the Bible that condemn us for actions/feelings (sins) that God made pleasurable to us. Especially when its parts were written by men & assembled at the direction of a ruler that was trying to appease the religious leaders of his time.

Sorry for rambling. I just wanted to say thank you for expressing something that I really needed to hear right now.
