Last year I was splitting stumps for my father and grandfather using a sledge hammer and wedges. Pulled something in my lower back. Went to the chiropractor and had x-rays taken. Have you tried Pilates? Lots of exercises that target specific areas of the body, you don't need any fancy equipment, and you don't need to go to classes at the gym - just pick up a few video tapes.
